Battleship Missouri docked

USS Missouri moved from Pearl Harbour

Missouri

USS Missouri has been moved from the berth she has occupied in Pearl Harbor for the first time in more than 11 years. Four tugs towed the 57,000-ton battleship two miles down the harbour on 14 October 2009 to Dry Dock 4 in Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard to undergo a three-month refit.

The work will cost US$18 million and include sandblasting, hull inspection and any necessary repairs, followed by preservation treatment and repainting from top to bottom. Japan signed the surrender documents aboard Missouri in September 1945, ending the Pacific War, and the ship later served in the Korean War and 1991 Desert Storm campaign.

Missouri will remain in dry dock until 7 January, and will be returned to her Ford Island pier in time for the 66th anniversary celebration of her launching.
